I heard this story today about a teenager named Anthony battling cancer who really enjoyed receiving visits in the hospital from pet therapy dogs during his chemotherapy sessions. His mother saw how much joy the dogs brought him and started a Facebook page asking pet owners to post photos of their dogs. Her plan was to show Anthony the photos on the days when the pet therapy dogs weren’t in the hospital. So far this page Photo Doggies for Anthony has half a million posts.
Pet therapy has been used for years in helping people with illnesses and the elderly improve their quality of life. I have personal experience with this and can totally understand how having animals around can alleviate some of the stress an illness brings. A week after diagnosis, we were at the Animal Shelter adopting a kitty to help me through my rough time. During my treatment, he brought me so much joy and helped take my mind off of “The Big C”. There were so many days when nothing else could snap me out of my funk except my pet therapy. Having him in my life was so wonderful, we added a dog to our family as well last year. My pets give unconditional love and always seem to be doing silly stuff to bring a smile to my face like in this photo:
And sometimes they climb on the table and get up on my make-shift photo studio when I am trying to take photos like in this picture:
Let’s not underestimate the power of pet therapy and how something we often take for granted could mean the world to someone else in their dark hours. Let’s share our funniest pet therapy pictures with the world and wish Anthony a speedy recovery.
